Researchers, there's a lot going on in the world right now. President Obama has said that he believes we should take action against Syria. Yesterday, 9/11, marked 12th anniversary of the September 11th attacks. A 22 year old man confessed to killing a man drunk driving on Youtube, in a video that would later go viral. Take a look at a reliable news source and then post about a story in the news that you would like to discuss! If someone has already started a discussion about something you'd like to talk about--you may respond to them and share your thoughts as your post. Remember that this should be appropriate and academic discussion (ask questions, bring up new ideas, share your thoughts!)
Happy Writing!
While there is a great deal going on in the world today, my focus in the past three days has been on the 12th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks. While I love to read, I enjoy looking at CNN's "This Week in Photos." This week there was a link to photos from the Week of 9/11/2001. I was, just as you are now, a senior in high school. My school was outside of New York City and positioned in such a way that the skyline was visible from the front of our building. On 9/11/01, I was standing with many of my classmates outside of the front of our building watching the huge mushroom cloud of smoke as the Twin Towers fell. Because of where I am from, many people worked in the city and worked near the Twin Towers including my father. My father was safe but several of my friends lost parents and family members. At the time, I believed that the devastation that my community and our country felt could not be overcome. Today, the Freedom Tower stands in the place of the towers and two huge bright beams shine in the place of the towers on 9/11. As a result of that day, many of my friends and one of my brothers joined the military and deployed and our lives have been very different since. My junior prom date was among the first killed in Afghanistan.
ReplyDeleteThe more years I teach the younger my students are and the less they know about 9/11--a day that is such a HUGE part of my years in high school. I wonder how I help students to understand the importance of this day, the significance of this day. Is this a historical event that you, having been 5 or 6, feel tied to? Feel you have an understanding of? What does 9/11 mean to you?
I feel that going over the events of 9/11 would be great in helping understand the importance of the day. It would also help if you were to include statements or writings of any of the people affected by 9/11. To be honest, I don't feel tied to the event since it wasn't something I wasn't aware of at the time. I do have an understanding of what happened and I feel greatly for everyone had to experience it first-hand and for those who impacted by 9/11.
DeleteJust today I went on the web in senior seminar to look up two stories. One was about the fight against Syria and if Obama should go into war. The second story was about a man who made a video on youtube confessing to a drunk hit in run where he killed a man. I chose to talk about the drunk driver. On USA today, it said that "A driver confessed of killing a man while drunk driving on the opposite side of the rode. He released a 3 1/2 minute video on youtube confessing to his crime." The drivers name is Matthew Cordle and he is 22 years old. This accident of a drunken hit and run happened on June 22, 2013 in Columbus, Ohio. The victim was 61-year-old Vincent Canzani. The accident occurred on Interstate 670. The story was published Sept 6, 2013 at 5:25pm. I could not believe what I read once I chose this topic. I have never heard of someone actually recording a video on something terrible they have done and then turning themselves in to the police. He was charged 8 1/2 years in prison. This should be something that goes viral so teens and even adults can understand the serious consequences you can face when you drink in drive. This is no joke. Because of this, a man is dead all because this guy couldn't stay away from driving. A hit and run by a drunk driver can always be prevented. Do not drink. Do not drive. Save a life as well as your own.
ReplyDeleteI agree because I have been in a accident where the driver was drunk and he hit our car. Luckily no one got hurt but still I think people should think before they go out and get drunk then want to drive home late at night drunk when you can barely comprehend.
DeleteDarrion I concur with what you are saying and I believe that the police, instead of going out harassing people out on the streets like I have witnessed countless of times and even to me, they need to be on the road searching for people who may look like they are swerving or driving recklessly.
DeleteI agree with your perspective, Lizabel because some people don't think about how high the likely- hood of getting into an accident when they drink can be. Some think that it is cool to go out and drink, and then go home afterwards and expect that nothing will happen. The thing is, people always say, "I'm not drunk; I feel awesome." They don't know that their brain can shut down while they're driving. They don't think about the lives they are putting at risk; they only think about having the time of their lives, but how is it the time of their lives when they will probably not even remember what happened that night once they wake up? They don't think about the probabilities, and you're right, this should be viral because most don't know about the consequences until they're in the same situation. In my opinion, whether some might not like it, there should be cameras in all of the streets and random DUI checks because it is like you said, "A hit and run by a drunk driver can always be prevented." They were obviously not obeying the law, and that certain individual should not have the privilege to drive. Others' lives don't need to be put in risk just because an individual decided to make bad decisions.
DeleteI also read about the video confession and I think making the video and pleading guilty was that right thing for Matthew Cordle to do. He saw that someone's life was taken from them because of his actions and the only right thing to do was to take full responsibility of it.
Delete"Do not drink. Do not drive. Save a life as well as your own.", I agree with this because I was in a car accidents before. Thank God nobody was hurt. but just thinking about how I or someone could of loss their life because of it, gets you to be more safe when driving and/or getting in a car with someone who have been drinking.
This week on the new has been pretty heavy. Dealing with 9/11 and the consist murders going on in Chicago. But yesterday while watching You and Me Chicago I found a bit of lighter new that's very interesting to me, Nicki Minja is being sued for plagiarism. She is being sued by a local underground Chicago artist named Clive Tanaka. Her song "Starship" sound extremely the same as his song called "Neu Chicago". The question is why would such a talented star as Nicki Minja decide to take someone music without even noticing them? Also it leaves me thinking, how many other songs could she have stolen? For more information go to http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/ct-met-nicki-minaj-copyright-suit-20130911,0,4687682.story
ReplyDeleteIt's interesting to think about how "stealing" in this day and age has changed. The internet provides us with so much exposure to so many things that the likelihood that something is truly original is, I think, rare. I would wonder if Ms. Minaj writes her own music? Outside of the academic world, what is the appropriate punishment for stealing someone else's work?

DeleteI also have the same question, why would such a talented star as Nicki Minja decide to take someone music? This question sticks out because Nicki Minaj is very talent and everybody loves her and her music. She has sold out many shows and cd's, why do she have to steal someone else music? The question just leaves you wondering.
DeleteYesterday, September 12, 2013 a young teenager commit suicide because other girls were bullying her. Bullying has been going on for many years and schools continue to talk about bullying. I think bullying is a bad thing and if people are killing themselves because others are bullying them then I think bullying needs to stop. How people talk about other people appearance, personality, the way they dress, etc is not something you should do because we are all humans and just because someone is fat or can't wear all the name brand clothes doesn't mean they're any different from you. We all have feeling and if you hurt someones feelings there is no telling what that person can do. What do you guys think about bullying? Why do you think people bully others?
ReplyDeleteInteresting post. It would seem that there are more and more suicides getting national attention as a result of bullying. Do you think there is an actual rise in suicides? Or a rise in media coverage of teen suicides?
DeleteI think there is a actual rise in suicides in general because people don't just kill themselves because they are bullied there are people killing themselves over plenty of things.
DeleteI believe that it is an increase in the media coverage of teen suicides. I read in a paper that before 1980 there was plenty more suicides committed by teenagers with severe depression but it had to do with (LGBT)and other situations. The media ignored these deaths but I believe now it is becoming nationally apparent that teens are are future and if they are killing there selves then it is destroying are future so they are publicizing teen suicides to try and stop it.
DeleteI absolutely agree with you, Darrion. Teens, even children nowadays, are being bullied in school, at the park, or anywhere else they go. Some adults think that just talking about bullying and how it's wrong to do so will solve the problem. Bullying, that I know of, is talked about constantly, but nothing is ever done to officially stop it. Talking about bullying is no use, in my opinion, because some kids laugh when they don't know the final results that bullying may cause. I've witness this happen many times and it is not funny at all. Those who are currently bullying need to think: "How would I feel if someone kept pushing me around? Is it really worth it to humiliate this individual when he/she never did anything to me? Could they be going through enough at home already?" I think some people bully others because they want to feel some sort of "power" over the other. They feel that it is the only way they could fit in with the "popular" group. The thing that they don't know is that being yourself is the most powerful thing in the world because it shows that you respect others as well as yourself. Looks don't matter at all. It's like some people say, "looks can be deceiving." Bullying is a worldwide issue, and I think it's great that you brought it up, Darrion.
DeleteI think bullying has gotten to be horrible and we need fast solutions to put a stop to it. So many people are dieing from this and it sad because its affecting anyone. I feel so bad for those who killed themselves because they couldn't find a way out of there pain. No one should have to face the things this children do everyday of their lives.
DeleteI agree with Selina, bullying is always talked about but you don't hear or see people actually doing something to stop it as much as they talk about. I do believe that the person bullying don't realize that the person they are bullying may l already have problems going on home, that bullying them could actually lead into something more serious then just making they person look or feel bad. I'm actually glad that this was brought up because thee have been a increased in teens suicide and bullying seem like that number one cause. People need to realize that words can hurt people and they need think about what is being said before they actually say.
DeleteI agree 100%. Bullying is a serious issue. People should not be bullied under any circumstances. But sometimes I feel that people can take bullying a bit to personal. I feel that sometimes when people are bullied it can be solved with that person standing up to a bully. There is a saying that says " People treat you the way you allow them to treat you.". So if people don't allow others to bully them instead of being a victim could bullying be a actual problem?
DeleteSurfing the web, this one article caught my attention right away. Did you know Double Stuf Oreos aren't really double stuf? Yes this is what caught my eye because oreos are my favorite cookies and to find out i'm not getting what I expect is upsetting. Finding out the oreos aren't double stuf like they say, a high school in New York decided to do determining if the oreos are really double stuf. During math class for the students they weight one of each oreos, the double stuf one and the regular, to see if we're getting what we expect. To conclude the weighting of the cookies, they came to find out the double stuf is only 1.5 more filling then the regular oreo. Upsetting isn't it? I always thought my oreos were double but to find out they're not is going to drive me to another cookie brand.
ReplyDeleteWhat do you think should be done about this? Additionally, this made the news. What larger issue do you think this article brings up about marketing? It is shocking and in some respects important--buy why?
DeleteI believe this is important Ms. Hughes. Due to the fact that we have been lied to this entire time. I do believe this is more then just a .5 of filling missing; Its also the trust we can truly put into a well known product, such as Oreos. As for what we do about the millions of double stuffed Oreros customers, well I guess "That's just the way the cookie crumbles".
DeleteThis was really funny to find out. When I read about this I though the same thing like why would they lie about the oreos being doubled stuffed when they really aren't.
DeleteI believe we should be getting our moneys worth! We spend our money on oreos we expect to be double stuf as said on the label. People should really do something about this because to me, we're getting cheated out.
DeleteA North Carolina middle school teacher was suspended for three days for showing students the rap video "Same Love," Macklemore's song promoting equal rights for gays. Alexander County school board attorney Joel Harbinson stated,
ReplyDelete"The issue in this matter was one of whether the video was curriculum-based, educationally-related, and age-appropriate for a class of prepubescent 13-year-olds,".
This isn't the first time this has happened. This particular song has sparked a lot of controversy not only in the rap/hip hop community but everywhere. In the video two men at a wedding altar kiss and it ends with an elderly gay couple holding hands in a hospital room.
My questions are: What was your initial reaction do this topic?(I know it might seem generic but I'm truly curious in others reactions) Do you believe that this would have been the case if it was a video of two heterosexual couples? Do you feel this was an appropriate punishment for the teacher? Or Was the punishment all together a completely unnecessary?
Source:http://www.cnn.com/2013/09/12/showbiz/same-love-teacher-suspended/index.html
DeleteI believe that it was an unnecessary punishment because most kids at the age 13 are exposed to more then a couple who chooses to be with the same sex. I think the teacher only got that kind of punishment because the principal of that school is against same sex marriage.
DeleteIn my opinion, this punishment was truly unnecessary. This is supposed to be the "land of the free," but how is it that we are free if society wants each individual to like the opposite sex? Society today wants everyone to be a certain way, which is violating our human rights. Is it a really serious thing that most people are homosexuals? Are we not human to know what we think is best for ourselves? We are obviously imprisoned by society to know that we cannot make our own decisions. This controversy is truly being supported by the government and is not fair at all.
DeleteThough this week there are different things going on in the world, for instance 9/11 and Syria conflict within its conflict, my focus for this week has been on a man who burned a woman's corpse and is being charged with rape. While reading interesting stories on ABC 7 news, it came to my attention that the man is a truck driver who was suspected in the 2009 because of the death of his girlfriend, but only served time for burning her corpse, and he has been charged with raping his ex-wife. To me this is very sad to read, not only does it break my heart that he would burn his girlfriend but also rape his wife. That is very heartbroken to read.
ReplyDeleteReading this is very hard, I think he had to have a very hard childhood for him to be able to rape someone, kill someone, and than turn around and burn the corpse of someone. What ever the reason was I think he should be severely punished. But I also agree with you this is very heartbreaking to read about.
DeleteJust today, September 13, 2013, a teenage boy was shot in his lower right side of his back. This boy's name was Javier Cameron and was only 14 years old. He was known to be very well-behaved with honors classes and went to school on time. The bullet hit his kidney, pancreas, stomach, and damaged his small intestine. Police claimed that he was involved in gang activity. The mother of the victim said herself that her son is not in a gang. This story caught my attention because this boy was a great student. He tried to defend himself, but a two-on-one fight is not fair, especially when one of them has a gun. The thing that really made me upset is the fact that the police claimed he was in a gang. But, how is he in a gang if he is doing well in school and not acting a fool? Gang/gun violence is a big issue, and I think there should be more control, especially on who is able to get a gun. To be honest, no one should have access to weapons unless you're a police official. I don't feel it's fair that innocent children have to suffer in pain just because the government does not control who can get access to weapons. Therefore, control is necessary to keep the neighborhoods safe.
ReplyDeleteLink to whole story: http://abclocal.go.com/wls/story?section=news/local&id=9246781
I agree with you Selina that the government should only let police officers carry guns and no one else. Also another thing that got me mad while reading this is that the police claims that the 14 year old boy is in a gang when he has good grades and was a good student in school. How will he know he is in a gang. Does he have proof that the little boy is in the gang. Cops shouldn't judge something that they don't know or have a clue about. That's my opinion.
DeleteI agree with you Selina. Firearms should be banned and not legal for anyone to just buy anywhere. This is how crimes involving young teens rise. This relates to the Trayvon Martin case. The man, Zimmerman, should have not had a weapon. The whole purpose of being a neighborhood watch is to watch the neighborhood, not have a weapon. I also did not see the evidence of Trayvon to be a threat. Therefore, firearms should be illegal so people can be more safe and crime can go down.
DeleteWell that's really not true because I know a lot of people that have been in honors classes and are in a gang. As for myself I was in a gang once and I had all honors classes. But it's not about what people do in school it's also about what they are doing on the streets most parents don't know what their children are doing, and the children will never confess to what they do.
DeleteToday I was watching my favorite news station WGN news, and heard a interesting story. at times square in New York, Two women were injured as police try to take down a emotionally disturbed man. the man walked into traffic, acting like he had a gun. the man dug into his pockets and pulled his hand out like he had a weapon, in hopes of police firing their bullets. One women a 54- year old was shot in the knee, while the other a 35- year old was shot in the butt. Reading this I ask myself, if the violence was really necessary. The police seen that the man didn't have a gun yet they shoot anyway. Plus didn't they take target practice? It only takes one bullet to kill someone. The women were lucky, because just a bit higher and their lives could have ended.

Today I was reading something on Chicago tribune about a boy who went to our school. His name was Okoi Ofem, he was locked up. He was found dead after hanging his self in a cell. He was taken to Trinity hospital where he was pronounced dead at 7:44 am yesterday morning.
ReplyDeleteThis past week I have been very interested in the indecent with George Zimmerman and his wife. After Zimmerman allegedly came to his wife's father's house and threatened them both with a gun. His wife called the police and brought up charges against Zimmerman, but now only to drop them after consulting her lawyer. I feel that George Zimmerman has been protected ever since the Trayvon Martin case. Even though he isn't a cop there seems to be something suspicious going on. His wife has even stated that she is scared because she doesn't know what he is capable of. Could Zimmerman be protected? Or did he just put a fear over his wife I find this to be very interesting. It seems to be a lot of suspicious activity with Zimmerman
ReplyDeleteIf you want to know more about the incident go to http://wgntv.com/2013/09/09/george-zimmerman-taken-into-police-custody-in-florida/
I believe George Zimmerman is being protected, when he was on trial for the Trayvon Martin case one of the jurors acted as though she knew him prior to the trial. And even after hitting his father-in-law he still has not been arrested. His wife has every right to fear him he commited a murder and made himself the victim in that murder all in less than a year. In my opinion a person who can take the life of another person can do anything.
DeleteI agree with you Mariah and Tiana. I felt Zimmerman was getting away with too much. I felt that if we were to commit either of these two crimes we would quickly suffer consequences. I find it unfair that this man has gotten away with murder and threatening two people with a weapon. I believe that the government should step up and enforce some laws immediately.
DeleteI completely agree with you over the fact that he is being protected, because yes he is not a cop anymore but if you look at all the threats he got after Trayvon Martin's case, the government does not want another blood on their hands because they know that mostly everyone new he was guilty.
DeleteThere was a newscast on September 14, 2013 on the website of NBC news that stated how the researchers at the University of Michigan conducted a study that showed how an alarming amount of seniors in high school have driven a vehicle after drinking or being under the influence of an illegal drug. the study showed how these seniors have driven or driven in a vehicle with someone under the influence of an illegal substance in the past two weeks. Most parents are worried about their kids texting and driving but have not taken into account that driving under the influence of an illegal substance is as bad or worse than texting while driving. Do the actions of these irresponsible young adults place all the drivers around them into an even bigger risk of a car accident? Why are these teens not warned or talked to about the dangers of driving while intoxicated and the cause and effect factor it causes on others? Here is the link: http://www.nbcnews.com/video/nightly-news/53019112/#53000801
ReplyDeleteI believe that this is true because their are a lot of factors that play a big role in the life of teens. These factors can be either positive or negative and most of the time the negative factors over power the positives.Often times teens end up making the wrong choices because they were feeling as if it was the right decision to make at that given time.
DeleteIn resent years, medical and technological advancements are constant. One of the more resent advancements to catch my attention was an experiment in where two baby rabbits were successfully born glowing florescent green. Researchers in the university of Hawaii accomplished this by injecting a pregnant rabbit's embryos with a natural glowing jellyfish protein. There were a few baby rabbits but only two successfully carried the gene. The point of this experiment is to eventually have rabbits that produce medicine in their milk, and the naturally glowing protein helps determine which rabbits have that specific gene. I personally find this interesting because it shows how far us as humans are advancing in the field of medicine.

Recently, The Colorado Office of Emergency management reports that five people, four in Boulder and one in El Paso County, are dead. This all happened because of the Destructive Flooding in Colorado. This happened two days ago and what I would like to talk about is if anybody ever get scared that we might have a flood in chicago? Like how would it affect us and what damage would it bring expecially since we are right by lake Michigan.

Over this past weekend while I surfed the web along with watching the news, there was an incident where a 19 year old young man was found dead in cell. After he was arrested and put into lock up. When the police authorities returned to check on him they found him hanging from the ceiling. This was a tragedy and was a total surprise to family, friends, and anyone who know him. The young man that was found was Okoi Ofem. Who had recently attend our high school but dropped out because of personal issues. Rest In Peace Okoi Ofem, you will be missed.
ReplyDeleteAt times we see these things on the news and we just brush it off as if nothing happen. However when you know the person it really hurts. We all should pay our respects because he was a former Student and friend
DeleteIt really does hurt especially seeing how Okoi was a good friend to many. To know that he was once walking the halls of epic academy and was many of our friends it is sad to know that he has passed. This just goes to show you how important school actually is and how short of a life span we have.
DeleteI agree and it only makes things even more shocking because it was all of a sudden. Who could image what happen and why it happen.
DeleteOn September 5, 2013 Authorities say that a 19-year-old Benedict College student bled to death after delivering a stillborn baby alone in her dorm room. Gary Watts said the student was found dead Tuesday night, but the delivery likely happened about three days before. The girl that passed away from delivering a baby and bleed to death was named Ayaanah Gibson and was a freshman in Sacramento California studying chemistry.
ReplyDeleteWhat I wounder like other people wounder is why didn't she call for help when she saw that the bleeding didn't stop. She could of scream for help. one thing that keeps me thinking is what happen to the baby.
One questions that I have for others is " What will you do if something like this was to happen to you?"
I also read this story and was shocked. It is an incredibly sad story. What larger questions do you think it raises? Certainly it has us thinking about what we would do. I wonder also what the implications of this are on student health. Did the the student have access to healthcare at her campus? What, I wonder, prevented her from seeking healthcare prior to the birth of the child.
DeleteIt seems like that 19 year old girl could of have some family, social issues where she wanted to have the baby alone and not want anyone to know her life problem, so therefore she decide to have to kid alone and suffer still death rather than reaching out to others for help
Deleteshe didn't know she was in labor, it just happen. She didn't get induce . Well that's what I read.
DeleteBrowsing through the internet completely out of boredom, I came across an interesting article. The title alone caught my eye, "Rape sentencing feels like judgment day for all of India". In the article 3 men are sentence to death for raping a 23 year old women on a bus. Many people state that they deserve to die for their actions. Many claim that India its another step closer for equality between men and women. I see it as actions being taken a it to far. Death is pretty extreme don't you think?
ReplyDeleteIf you want to read the article here's the link: http://www.cnn.com/2013/09/13/world/asia/india-rape-judgment/index.html?hpt=ias_t2
I agree with you Viviana. But I really do feel bad for those men.Not only do they have to think about what they've done but also their fellow jail mates may not take too kindly to their actions.Maybe letting them live will be much heavier a sentence rather than sudden death.
DeleteThis may be the most controversial and most unimportant subject in the news but it tied to one event: Miley Cyrus. She recently was scheduled to be front cover of Vogue but after her MTV Awards performance she was booted off.I think her performance was not only overly sexual but she's being rebellious towards her father. Her irresponsible behavior has turned from a role model for little girls to a woman of distaste.I really wonder what's going through her head and also what has made her change so drastically. Its really not a good look for her.
ReplyDeleteSource:http://www.chicagotribune.com/entertainment/chi-miley-cyrus-vogue-20130908,0,6604307.story
This raises a larger question, I think. If Miley Cyrus were a man, would her behavior be viewed differently?
DeleteAdditionally, are celebrities responsible for the image that they portray? Even more broadly, as adults are we responsible as role models?
I understand what a lot of people are saying about her, and in someways I feel the same. What will some parents do with their daughters who once looked up to her. In her defense I feel that she may have gotten tired of being put on a pedestal for little kids and decided to act like herself. This may have been her attitude the whole time but she held back because of the people who looked up to her. Now that she's gotten older she feels that it's time for a change.
DeleteI hear from many people that Since Miley believes she is a full grown adult she can do whatever she wants. Her behavior has changed by age and maybe influenced by others changed her aswell.
DeleteI think if Miley Cyrus were a man she would just seem to be "wild" to the public. But I think its hit us harder is because she's gone from one thing to a completely other thing.Yet I believe they are responsible for their images. Its not the public that makes who you are.No not all adults are responsible role models.
DeleteI understand where your coming from since the world seems to give much more attention to women sexuality then men; however, in the case at hand I do feel the transformation of a former-Disney channel star to a all out rebel is what pushes her case over the top. Many people looked up to her, idolized her, wanted to be her. To see Miley change was shocking to say the least, and that is what brought it to further new and costed her the cover.
Deletewhile visiting the news website I came across an article that talk a Gunman that opens fire at Navy Yard in Washington, killing at least 4 people. This article was surprising for me because when I was reading the article I thought that I would of come across the reason why this person had the shot but it happened to be there were no reason as it stated by "Dr. Janis Orlowski, the chief medical officer at MedStar Washington Hospital Center, said that the hospital was treating three gunshot victims — a woman hit in the head and hand, a woman hit in the shoulder and a man hit in the legs." due to this it seems like this person didn't have a particular target he was reaching for or any plan in place but instead it seems like these days many people who have a gun in hand like to think of it as a game, for them its a way to feel the experience of power.
ReplyDeleteRecently the UN officials have confirmed the use of sarin gases in Syria, what dose that mean for the United States? Recently I have been looking in to the topic and it seems we are planning an invasion. However both China, Russia, and Iran are against this happening. Russia even supplies weapons for Syria and both Russia and China are permanent chairs of the UN having the right to veto any plan of invasion.

On September 14, 2013 a homeless man in Boston who found a backpack containing $2,400 in cash and $39,500 in travelers checks turned over the lost treasure to the police. This was really nice of him considering that he is homeless. I know the right thing to do is to give the money to the police, but he has nothing. Because he did that I'm sure good will come to him one day.
ReplyDeleteI read this article too, I have to agree that despite him being homeless, he has lot of consideration for the owner worrying about his lost money. He could have easily taken it for himself, get out of the cycle of poverty, but rather return it and continue with his life. It shows character.
DeleteIf you haven't heard, or forgot, there is this ship off the cost of Italy that has been laying on its side thanks to the support of rock; if it weren't for that the ship would already be underwater. However, why bother to rescue a ship that has been half-floating for over a year that in the end is worthless? As I read on I learned that inside this once glamorous ship, and that despite all the people that were saved, the are still two bodies trapped inside. Much work has been put into this operation that platforms have been build underneath the water to stabilize the cruise. All efforts seem to lay on this as a last measurement to recuperate the missing bodies and along the way to save what is left of the cruise.
ReplyDeleteOn Jan. 13, 2012 the Costa Concordia a Cruz liner struck a coral reef forcing the ship to sink to its side on the coast of Tuscany, Italy.Sadly 32 of the 4,200 passengers were killed in this sad incident and two families have let to receive the bodies of their family members who are said to be at the bottom of the wreckage.More than 500 engineers from 24 countries across the world are working to pull the ship vertically then tow it to safety. This moment is a "break or make" moment because the weather can be unpredictable at so the window of opportunity can appear at anytime.
ReplyDeleteIt sounds like your posts, Robert and Manny, are tied. What larger question do they raise?
DeleteChild marriage is still allowed in some places, like Yemen. It grants permission to the parents to for their young child to mary someone who could very well be fifty years older than the child. I understand that it something that they have been practicing for a great amount of time, but I don't believe it's right. I will not shame them for taking part in this practice, but I will not support it. In an article, it is said that an eight year-old died of internal bleeding for injuries that she suffered the night of her wedding. The article also happens to mention that a 12 year-old Yemeni bride died of internal bleeding three days after her wedding as a result to intercourse. Action taken against child marriage is mentioned by the article, but is unsuccessful. I really believe that child marriage shouldn't be allowed because it puts the lives of children at risk. Continuing to allow it only means that you're willing to wait to hear when the next incident as a result to child marriage. As action against child marriage continues, do you think that it will ever be something of the past and not something that exists in the present? Secondly, how would you feel being forced to marry someone who was way older than you?
